Socio-Economic Study

The Eastern Georgian Bay Stewardship Council, Manitoulin Area Stewardship Council and the Township of the Archipelago have embarked on a socio-economic study to assess the value of a rehabilitated fishery for Eastern Georgian Bay and the North Channel.

The study has been split into two phases.  Phase 1 is the production of a scoping report to assess the feasibility of the project, identify challenges to be overcome and lay the foundation of how to proceed with Phase 2.

Phase 2 comprises the production of comprehensive socio-economic study within the benefits assessment framework identified in Phase 1.  It will also provide a systematic decision-making tool to guide fishery management decisions taking into account basic economic principles and procedures.

To date (October 2007), Phase 1 has been completed and report is available below. We are continuing to assess the implications and challenges of proceeding with Phase 2.  In this regard we are actively seeking new partners and expertise to bring this project to fruition.
