Many fish
populations in the area of concern are in various stages of
rehabilitation. The reasons for depressed fish populations in much of
eastern Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron are varied and
complex. This aquatic ecosystem has experienced significant changes,
many of which have been detrimental to desired nearshore fish species
(walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, muskellunge yellow perch)
identified as priority species by the Council. Habitat destruction,
fishing pressure, introduction of exotic species (sea lamprey, alewife,
carp), altered river flow rates, natural predators, changing climate,
and impacts on water quality have all been implicated in stressing or
reducing the abundance of various fish species.
Current recreational fishing
regulations, governing the priority species mentioned above are not
consistent with rehabilitating or improving the status of these stressed
species. Influencing the number of fish harvested by the recreational
fishery is one way to improve fish populations. Many of the factors
affecting fish populations, are difficult to control (climate change),
particularly in short term. By changing current recreational fishing
regulations with the intent of promoting population recovery or
sustainability will improve ecological, cultural and economic benefits
derived from these populations.
